METROPOLIS – THE CITY OF THE FUTURE. IN A MUSICAL REWORKING BY GIDEON HOMES.
Fritz Lang's monumental science fiction film combines visual power with a love story about the reconciliation of labour and capital: Joh Fredersen rules high above the city, while the workers toil underground. Fredersen's son Freder falls in love with the workers' leader Maria. At the same time, Rotwang, the inventor, creates a steel robot, which he gives the appearance of Maria on Fredersen's instructions. The false Maria incites the workers to abandon their machines, causing the city to flood. Only through the efforts of Freder and Maria can Metropolis be saved. The city's ruler and the workers realise that ‘brains’ and ‘hands’ belong together.
Gideon Homes was born into the Sabajo family, an Indian tribe called the Arawaks, who lived in the regions of South Florida and Suriname. Suriname was colonised by the Dutch, which is why part of the family moved to the Netherlands, where Gideon was born in Eindhoven. Gideon's focus has always been on subcultures and the different strata of society. This also flows into his projects.
